Target Audience

This activity is intended for all University of North Texas Health Science Center educators teaching within any of HSC schools or colleges. Professional continuing education credits will be offered for the following professions: physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, nurses,  social workers, licensed public health professionals, and licensed professional counselors. Other professionals may claim participant credit.

Statement of Need

Addressing educational inequities has been the focus of institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) operations for years (Shore et al., 2011). However, the recent crisis (including the COVID-19 pandemic, systemic racism in this country, and racial inequities in higher education) has prompted an urgent call for more effective strategies to be placed at the core of institutional practice. 

To address the problem above through professional development at HSC, it is critical to develop systematic training for faculty and staff covering a variety of DEI-related topics including but not limited to culturally responsive teaching, cultural/intercultural competence, implicit bias and microaggressions, critical race theory of education, and the role of education in combating health disparity.  Equipping these practicing and teaching health professionals with this knowledge and skill enables these faculty to instill these in the next generation of healthcare professionals. 

Educational Objectives

After completing the AHSE Spring 2022 Series, participants will be able to: 

• Recognize the cultural characteristics and contributions of different ethnic groups. 

• Develop a knowledge base of cultural diversity and convert it to culturally responsive curriculum designs and instructional strategies. 

• Create classroom climates (both in-person and online) that are conducive to learning for diverse student populations. 

• Recognize implicit bias and microaggressions in the learning environment. 

• Apply practical tools and strategies for addressing bias and microaggressions in day-to-day teaching encounters. 

Accreditation and Credit Designation Statements

Physicians
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). The University of North Texas Health Science Center is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of North Texas Health Science Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 7 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)^TM.

Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The University of North Texas Health Science Center is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to award continuing medical education to physicians. The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth designates this program for a maximum of 7 AOA Category 2-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.

Nurses
The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This activity provides up to 7 contact hour(s). 

Pharmacists
The University of North Texas Health Science Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This knowledge-based activity has been assigned UAN 0845-0000-22-002-L04-P and will award 7 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education credit in states that recognize ACPE Providers.

Statements of participation will indicate hours and CEUs based on participation and will be issued online at the conclusion of the activity. Successful completion includes completing the activity, its accompanying evaluation and/or posttest (score 70% or higher), and requesting credit online at the conclusion of the activity. Credit will be uploaded to CPEMonitor, and participants may print a statement of credit or transcript from their NABP eprofile. UNTHSC complies with the Accreditation Standards for Continuing Pharmacy Education.

Public Health Professionals
This activity is approved for 7 credit(s) accepted by the National Board of Public Health Examiners' Certified Public Health (CPH) recertification program.

Licensed Professional Counselors
University of North Texas Health Science Center certifies that this meets the requirements for continuing education under Texas Administrative Code. This activity is providing 7 CEU credits.

Social Workers
This activity is approved for a maximum of 7 Clock Hours for Social Workers.
